Fashion trends are constantly changing but certain pieces will always have a place in our closets. They can be mixed and matched with current trends, or help to pull a look together and keep things professional.

We speak to Charlene Koh, Co-Founder and Image Stylist of Fleek Image, for her tips on dressing for success in the corporate world and her five fashion essentials.

A plain white tee

The humble plain white tee is indispensable as it can anchor statement pieces like printed bottoms or brightly coloured jeans. Charlene recommends styling it with a pair of black cigarette pants for a chic look. If you own statement jewellery, throw it on top of your white tee and you’ll be good to go.

The perfect pair of jeans

Whether they are flared, cropped, skinny, boot cut or boyfriend, the perfect pair of jeans can make you look slimmer, taller or shorter or wider. It really depends on the look you’re going for. In general, opt for a darker wash of denim as you’ll be able to wear it more frequently. Or, try a flattering boot cut that elongates your gams.

Black pants

If you forgo any of the other pieces, this is one basic you absolutely must have. It looks good in a variety of styles and has won the hearts of fashion editors (think: Emmanuelle Alt) and influencers around the world.

A well-tailored blazer

The well-tailored blazer is Charlene’s favourite outerwear and substitute for a cardigan. A blazer instantly pulls any look together, whether you’re dressing up for a corporate event or going casual. The fit of the blazer is of utmost importance so if you can’t find a blazer that fits off the shelf, get one tailored instead.

Day to night dress

As working women, many of us spend the day at work, then head for a night out with friends after. The challenge? Finding a piece that transitions well from day to night.

Versatility is key and Charlene recommends opting for a structured fitted dress that also makes for a great date night outfit.
