To many, the Met Gala is the American East Coast’s highlight of the year.

This intensely coveted event – held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York – is a heavily star-studded affair where high-profile celebrities turn out in full fashionable force on the steps of the Met Museum.

The gala celebrates the opening of the Met Costume Institute’s annual blockbuster fashion exhibition. This year’s pays tribute to Rei Kawakubo, the founder of revolutionary label Comme des Garçons – known for challenging the concepts of beauty, identity and genre.

So, naturally, everyone turned to the experimental side of fashion as they graced the steps of the Met.

Rihanna in Comme des Garçons

Singer Rihanna definitely knows how to get the internet talking. The last time she made waves was in 2015, when she turned up in a yellow dress with a goldenrod cape by Chinese couturier Guo Pei. She sat out for last year’s Met Gala.

This year, Rihanna donned an overwhelmingly flamboyant Comme des Garçons dress that epitomises the ‘over-the-top’ nature of avant garde. Coupled with matching eyeshadow and strappy stilettos, Rihanna set herself apart from the rest of dazzling attendees.
