Happiness can be more achievable with a fast-emerging field – Positive Psychology

If you are leading a happy, fulfilling life right now, good for you! For the rest of us, happiness might seem elusive and fleeting.

The good news is, there is recent research on how happiness can be made more achievable with a fast-emerging field – Positive Psychology.

What is Positive Psychology?

Positive Psychology is a scientific study of the factors that enable people and communities to thrive and to lead more fulfilling lives.

Contrary to what you might think, Positive Psychology is not a fluffy subject based solely on motivational self-talk and positive thinking. It looks into psychological theories, research and intervention techniques used to understand the more adaptive and emotionally-fulfilling aspects of human behaviour.

Professional practitioners of Positive Psychology seek to find and nurture talent, and to help the average person to move up from merely surviving in life to a thriving state. In contrast, conventional psychology studies primarily focus on languishing individuals.

This “positive” branch of study complements without the intention of ignoring or substituting traditional areas of psychology. It brings attention to the possibility that only focusing on the disorder may result in a limited understanding of a person’s true condition.

Like other fields of psychology, Positive Psychology can be used to develop an individual on a personal level in addition to being used as a professional tool.

“Psychology is applicable to everyone; some of us use it to help others, some of us use it to help ourselves,” explains Stephen Lew, Director of The School of Positive Psychology (TSPP).

Applying Positive Psychology to our own lives can help in cultivating confidence, finding meaning and achievement, and forging better relationships, amongst other things.

HOW TSPP HELPS

Although Positive Psychology first took root in Singapore seven years ago in the form of TSPP, our nation of highly stressed-out fellow Singaporeans have yet to fully tap on this emerging discipline as a resource to improve productivity, life fulfilment and general happiness.

TSPP is the first school in Asia that promotes the art, science and practice of Positive Psychology. As a CPE-registered higher education training institute, it aims to increase Positive Psychology’s exposure to the public and to encourage its use.

Other than psychology-centric education and credentialing, TSPP also promotes research and training in fields such as Applied Positive Psychology, Psychotherapy, Positive Business Psychology and Hypnotherapy.

It incorporates positive psychology into other branches of psychology, inculcating students with the skill to cultivate meaningful, fulfilling lives and to enhance life experiences.

This month, TSPP is launching three new certification programmes – Certificate in Psychology, Certificate in Counselling and Certificate in Psychology and Counselling – that can be completed within three to six months.
