Ever wondered how epic the very first celebration of Singapore’s independence in 1966 was like? Or how some segments evolved to become regular performances every year?

All your National Day Parade (NDP)-related questions can be answered at 50 Years of National Day Parades, a travelling exhibition curated by the National Heritage Board (NHB) in conjunction with NDP 2016.

Go all the way back to the very first parade in 1966, charting the many “firsts”, evolutions and highlights over the years. You can also discover interesting behind-the-scenes trivia about the parades, and even listen to the stories of participants in the first NDP.

You’ll be able to observe – from more than 100 pictures – how the past parades mirror our nation’s progress and evolving concerns. For example, the NDPs of the 60s and 70s were focused on Singapore’s independence, the building of a rugged society and the showcasing of our nation’s military might.

After that, the NDPs of the 80s and 90s presented a coming-of-age for Singapore, which celebrated booming economic success and international standing. More recent parades reflected innovation and community.
