Meet the witches
This staging of “Wicked” casts a talented international company, with its two main stars being Scottish. Carly Anderson appears as the outgoing Glinda the Good – but, as the actress knows all too well, she’s not as benevolent as she seems.
“Looking back at [the films] now, watching Glinda come down in a bubble when Dorothy first arrives, it’s amazing to realise that’s all a public persona and you know what happened previously,” enthuses Anderson.
Indeed, ask Jacqueline Hughes, who plays the Wicked Witch of the West, and she’ll vindicate her misjudged character. “Elphaba is fiery, unfortunately misunderstood, quick-witted, powerful and headstrong,” she describes. “She knows what she wants – there’s no middle ground with Elphaba.”

Amid revelations of the witches’ real story, “Wicked” also peels back the layer on other popular icons of L Frank Baum’s original tale, as first revealed in the novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” by Gregory Maguire.
Anderson teases, “People who have watched The Wizard of Oz will love all those little moments where they can see how the Cowardly Lion became cowardly, how the Tin Man came about and where the jewelled shoes came from.”
