INFINITE: We miss the girls in Singapore

South Korean boy band Infinite took questions from the media in front of fans yesterday.

Fans who didn’t manage to secure tickets to Infinite’s 2nd Asia Tour concert here got lucky yesterday, as the boy band spent some extra time with them in an open press conference held at City Square Mall.

After hours of camping out in the area – some since the crack of dawn – the fans roared with screams of adoration when the seven members appeared at 8pm.

The band is made up of leader and main vocalist Kim Sungkyu; rappers Jang Dongwoo and Hoya (Lee Howon); and singers Nam Woohyun, Lee Sungyeol, L (Kim Myungsoo) and Lee Sungjong. They are aged from 22 to 26 years.

Of course, they didn’t just show up on stage; after all, what’s a fan event without a bit of teasing? The boys peeked out from the rooftop garden above before making their way to the event area. Then, from behind the curtains a sleeved arm popped out, making cheeky hand gestures like a thumbs-up and a wave.

When they finally came out on stage, their love for their fans – who are officially named “Inspirit” – was obvious. Resident charmer L spent half his time waving and posing, much to the delight of many an enamoured fangirl.

The youngest member, Sungjong, also couldn’t contain his smiling and waving on stage. Rapper Dongwoo took some moments to shape his arms into a heart for the crowd.

It got so intense that, at one point, the host paused the press conference to let the guys finish their affectionate greetings before carrying on.

When things simmered down (but not by a lot), we managed to dig out some lesser-known titbits from the members. When asked what they liked to do when they’re bored in the hotel, L shared, “I love watching Korean dramas, so I download and watch them when I’m overseas.”

On the other hand, Sungkyu – the oldest member of the group – reveals that he plays video games and thinks about his fans. Met by an incredulous look from Hoya, Sungkyu then added: “I also think about my mother.”

Those curious about how these young men maintain their builds will be interested to know that Sungjong takes vitamins and ginseng gifted to him by caring fans. He also gets “energised just by hearing the fans’ voices”.

Throughout the conference, the boys certainly laid the sugar coating on thick for the fans. When quizzed on what they like the most about Singapore, not one member responded with the usual “chilli crab” quip.

Instead, Sungkyu responded with a glint in his eye, “Well, I did miss the girls here…” While this was not translated, fans who understood a smidgen of Korean burst into frenzied screams.

Infinite offered much fan service to the crowd at City Square Mall yesterday. Here, they pose with their sign for “heart”, or “love”.

The session was also a cathartic one for Infinite, as they were asked to say one thing on their mind to the member beside them.

“Please get a haircut,” Hoya pleaded Sungjong, who was sporting a rather thick fringe that brushed his eyelashes.

Reluctant to leave, Sungjong blows kisses to his fans before exiting the stage.

The 30-minute session was up too soon, and as the seven exited the stage, even they seemed reluctant to go. Sungjong stayed to give his fans a few parting poses, while Hoya playfully ran back out for a final wave before disappearing again.

Infinite will perform tonight at 7.30pm at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre.
