It is a sad week for Studio Ghibli fans. Animator Makiko Futaki, who worked on some of the studio’s legendary titles over 30 years – including the Oscar-winning Spirited Away (2002) – died on May 13 from an unspecified illness.
A private funeral was held for Futaki, who passed away at 57 years old in a hospital in Tokyo, Japan.
Futaki’s other work under Studio Ghibli – helmed by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki – include Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbour Totoro and Princess Mononoke.
Her final credit was in Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s 2014 film, When Marnie Was There.
