Studio Ghibli Animator Makiko Futaki Passes At 57

She worked on almost every popular Ghibli animation, with her last credit being 2014’s When Marnie Was There

It is a sad week for Studio Ghibli fans. Animator Makiko Futaki, who worked on some of the studio’s legendary titles over 30 years – including the Oscar-winning Spirited Away (2002) – died on May 13 from an unspecified illness.

A private funeral was held for Futaki, who passed away at 57 years old in a hospital in Tokyo, Japan.

Futaki’s other work under Studio Ghibli – helmed by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki – include Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbour Totoro and Princess Mononoke.

Her final credit was in Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s 2014 film, When Marnie Was There.
