What You Might’ve Missed: On-Stage & Backstage Moments Of Oscars 2017

The 89th Academy Awards unveiled surprises as the night unfolded, including a wrong announcement

The 89th Academy Awards rolled out the red carpet for the best in international cinema on 27 Feb, but not without plenty of surprises in tow.

Case in point? Moonlight beat crowd and critic favourite La La Land for the Best Picture award.

That was after the latter swept through the awards season with significant wins at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and British Academy of Film and Television Arts, before arriving at the Oscars’ starting line with 14 nominations.

In fact, the major upset happened when La La Land held the title of Best Picture for about 45 seconds before another producer quipped, “This is not a joke — Moonlight has won Best Picture.”

Despite the bizarre mistake, there were plenty of thrills and spills.

For instance, host Jimmy Kimmel pranked a group of people on a Hollywood tour by bringing them to the Oscars — what luck!

Then, Viola Davis’ acceptance speech left everyone in tears. She is also the first black woman to win an Oscar, Emmy and Tony for acting.
