City Square Mall has transformed into a Bikini Bottom bonanza – our writers lay out the most amusing sights

If you step into City Square Mall and see this (above), don’t panic — you’re not at a pineapple under the sea.

Rather than your usual Christmas light-up, the shopping centre in Farrer Park has built a giant outdoor playground, made to resemble Bikini Bottom from the popular “Spongebob Squarepants” cartoon.

But if you think this is a kids-only affair, think again. The animated series about a talking sponge has proven popular with young adults and even grown-ups since its debut in 1999.

And because everyone deserves to have a good time, the Outdoor Spongebob Playland has fun and challenging activities that the whole family can take part in. Here’s a breakdown of what to do there.

Fun in Bikini Bottom

Throughout the park are several buildings from Bikini Bottom, Spongebob’s hometown, housing different attractions and activities.

First up is Spongebob’s own home, a pineapple, which you can enter, take a look around and snap a photo with Spongebob (above).

Take a shot at exciting mini-games at the Krusty Krab and Chum Bucket activity stations (above), where families can work together to score points and solve mysteries.

Then, brace yourself for a bouncing good time at SpongeBob’s Super Bouncer, an attraction that’s especially popular with kids.

To enter the SpongeBob Playland, you can redeem an activity pass at the mall’s customer service counter on the second level with a minimum spend of $30 at City Square Mall. To help you find your way around this Bikini Bottom on land, here’s a map you can take with you:

Underwater winter wonderland

Another part of the playland is a delightful winter show to fit the season.

The playland is open from 12pm to 10pm daily, but you might want to head there towards the end of the day. Besides avoiding the hot sun, you’ll get to catch the festive atmosphere as the park transforms into a winter wonderland from 8pm to 9pm, with dancing lights and foam bubbles.

Also accompanying the Playland is Santa’s Bazaar (below), where you can also treat yourself to a delectable array of Christmas treats and goodies.

Seize this opportunity to give back to society during this season of giving, as a portion of the sale proceeds will be donated to charity. Santa’s Bazaar open from 12pm – 10pm every weekend until Dec 27.

A gift for lucky shoppers

Lovers of Spongebob can also bring a piece of the yellow fellow home. City Square Mall is giving away an exclusive 2-in-1 cushion with a minimum spending of $200 ($300 if inclusive of NTUC FairPrice receipts).
