9 things to eat, see and do this weekend (Oct 9-11)

Whether you’d like to experience free Caribbean cook-offs or get freebies, look no further than our exciting guide

To eat

1. Vote and dine at the Great Caribbean Cook-Off

Great Caribbean Cook-Off

Come Oct 11, the first of many Caribbean cook-offs here kicks off at Singapore’s only Caribbean restaurant, Lime House.

You’ll be able to witness chefs from some of the city’s top dining establishments going head-to-head with their culinary prowess on two of the Caribbean’s best-loved dishes, Jamaican Jerk Chicken and Caribbean Fish Cakes.

Admission is free and everyone — whether you’re a fans of the chefs and Caribbean cuisine or just looking for delicious, hyped-up fun — is welcome to be at this exciting cook-off.

There are only 50 slots available for the public voting panel, which will be assigned on a first come first serve basis.

Registration is required at the door and each voter will be given the opportunity to taste the authentic dishes prepared by chefs as well as those from the Lime House’s kitchen.

2. Feast on seasonal hairy crabs

Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant - Steamed Whole Hairy Crab with Shiso Leaf 紫酥叶清蒸大闸蟹

The long-awaited hairy crab season is finally upon us and that can only mean one thing: It’s time to indulge in the crustacean’s succulent meat, rich creamy roe and delicate flavours.

One place to head to is Marriott Singapore’s Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant, which is offering exquisite Hairy Crab Set Menus and a la carte creations specially crafted by their master chefs.

Expect to enjoy dishes including the Steamed Whole Hairy Crab with Shiso Leaf and modern takes on the crustacean like the Hairy Crab Meat Broth with Conpoy and Hashima (frog fallopian tubes).

3. Try viennoiserie inspired by local flavours

SataySwirl_Spices3B

Loved for its delicate and lavish patisserie, Antoinette has recently unveiled its latest outlet, ‘La Pâtisserie au Sofitel’ at Sofitel So Singapore.

To mark the launch, Chef Pang has created a Singapore-inspired viennoiserie (baked goods made from a yeast-leavened dough) called ‘Satay Swirl’.

The danish is rich, buttery and packs a punch with the slightly spicy, marinated flavours of satay. We approve!
