5. The plot

So what will the movie be all about? As you can see from the trailer, the plot is still kept mysterious for now. Original series creator Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay of the movie, while Michael Engler, who’s directed four episodes of Downton, including the series finale, is directing the silver screen adaptation too. So fans can breathe a sigh of relief that we’re getting that authentic Downton feel again!

The movie will take us on a time jump: it begins about 18 months after the original series finale, from the year 1926. With a bigger screen this time, so does the scope of the story expand. Engler hints that the movie “takes the things you love about Downton – the romance, the intrigue, the pageantry – and makes it bigger.” We can also look forward to dramatic scenes that bring the whole cast together, a nice homecoming that fans will appreciate. Fellowes sees the reunion as everyone coming back for “a final curtain call,” so bring your tissues along. It’s going to get emotional.
