Typically, when we think of movies from Mainland China, we think of period costumes and martial arts. But what about an apocalyptic adventure, or car racing action? During the Lunar New Year period this 2019, China has released a range of blockbusters that crossed milestones and redefine what we know to be Mainland Chinese cinema. Sci-fi fantasy movies are taking over the box office, generating a lot of excitement and sometimes praise from critics and fans alike. Two of the biggest names in Mainland Chinese-Hong Kong cinema, Stephen Chow and Jackie Chan, also make their highly anticipated return to the big screen this year. 4. The New King of Comedy (新喜剧之王)

Stephen Chow is back! This time, he’s not starring, but directing, writing and producing in The New King of Comedy. His new film has a rather misleading title, but no, it’s not exactly a remake of or a sequel to his beloved 1999 movie King of Comedy. It does draw on the same ideas at the heart of the earlier movie – a film extra in her thirties dreams of making it big as a movie star, and finally gets a great opportunity that might just give her her much-deserved big break.
