Typically, when we think of movies from Mainland China, we think of period costumes and martial arts. But what about an apocalyptic adventure, or car racing action? During the Lunar New Year period this 2019, China has released a range of blockbusters that crossed milestones and redefine what we know to be Mainland Chinese cinema. Sci-fi fantasy movies are taking over the box office, generating a lot of excitement and sometimes praise from critics and fans alike. Two of the biggest names in Mainland Chinese-Hong Kong cinema, Stephen Chow and Jackie Chan, also make their highly anticipated return to the big screen this year. So line the following movies up and grab some snacks; you're in for a whole weeks' worth of fresh entertainment!
2. Crazy Alien (疯狂的外星人)
Leading the Chinese box office during the holiday period, Crazy Alien also incorporates the imaginative elements of science fiction with a dash of comedy. Throw in a controversial mocking portrayal of the United States, and the movie gets the Western world talking about it, too. An alien arrives on Earth and crash-lands in none other than a theme park in China, where a monkey trainer, Geng Hao, works. Geng decides to take the creature in and train it for shows, while the alien tries to avoid the US government’s attempts to locate and capture it.
