It’s time to embrace your kiasu-ness with the nation’s beloved comic character

In the midst of your Stephanie Suns, Zoe Tays and Joseph Schoolings, a long-forgotten national symbol has recently emerged from the shadows to step back into the spotlight. And he comes with generous helpings of paranoia.
After a 18-year long break, comic book character Mr Kiasu is set to make his comeback in a brand new installment called Mr Kiasu: Everything Also Like Real. The installment revolves around the character’s adventures through his attempt at starting his own company after retrenchment. Readers can expect to get their funny bones tickled with relatable Singaporean humour imbued with references of today’s generation of mobile gadgets, drones and share economies.
Created by Johnny Lau, the series’ first 128-page full-colour comic book ($13.80) will be sold in major Singapore bookstores on September 9. It will also be available at publisher Shogakukan Asia’s booth at the CharaExpo 2017 event, held at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre Level 4 on September 9 and 10. A talk and autograph session with Lau is also being planned on the second day.

One may hazard a guess that it is the millennials who will gleefully received Mr Kiasu’s return with open arms, seeing how the comic books were published in the 90s. Nostalgia surely comes in the form of sneakily reading the comics under school desks, before heading home to catch the adapted TV sitcom, starring Chew Chor Meng as Mr Kiasu. And who can forget the McDonald’s X Mr Kiasu Happy Meal toys?
