Calling all budding photographers! One of the most prestigious photography competitions in the world, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award, is back for its 39th year and welcomes all international professional as well as up-and-coming photographers to take part.

Submissions will open from 1 March to 1 April 2019. That’s just a little more than a month to go for you photographers out there to put together some of your best work, or take new ones.

Organised by Leica Camera AG, makers of the highly-esteemed Leica cameras, this globally renowned competition began in 1979 to recognise photography talents that observe, capture and express so brilliantly the relationship between man and the environment. We are always blown away by the winning works of the competition in previous years. Check out one of the works in the series, entitled “Red Ink” by Max Pinckers, which won the main award category in 2018:

For those who have started to make a living out of photography, take your career to new heights by submitting for the main category. The winner will receive a cash prize of 25,000 Euros (more than S$38,000), and on top of that a Leica M camera and a lens worth a total of 10,000 Euros (more than S$15,000)

Even if you don’t consider yourself a professional photographer, all you need is a keen eye for the art to have a shot at the competition. The Leica Oskar Barnack Award invites young rising photographers to participate in their side category: the Leica Oskar Barnack Award Newcomer competition.

More aspiring photographers will be able to take part this year, too. For the first time, the age limit for the Newcomer category has been raised! Open to all prospective photographers aged 28 and under (compared to the early age limit of 25), the Newcomer competition will award the winner with a cash prize of 10,000 Euros (about S$15,000), as well as a Leica M camera and lens also worth 10,000 Euros.

Here’s a peek at “Svetlana,” a beautiful series of photographs by Mary Gelman that won the Newcomer Award in 2018:

With the submission period just around the corner, it’s time to gather your best photographs that you have taken recently! In both categories, participants must submit a self-contained series of at least 10 and at most 12 images. They must be taken in 2018 or 2019, or be part of a long-term project that consists of at least one photo from 2018 or 2019.

Look for the photographs you’ve taken that really capture a profound interaction between man and the environment. The prestigious awards will be granted to photographers who demonstrate a perceptive observation and ability to capture the relationship between man and the environment.

The judges of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2019 are an international panel of photography experts. They will select twelve finalists from all the submissions, and the other ten finalists apart from the winners will also receive a cash prize of 2,500 Euros (more than S$3,800) each.

All the finalists will surely see their photography careers take off! Their submitted works will be displayed in a major public exhibition in Berlin, online on the competition website, as well as in print in the competition’s special print magazine. So don’t hesitate to take your shot and have your photography talent recognised around the world!

For more information about the competition rules, visit the official website. When it opens, submissions will be accepted online on the website.
