Emma Kingston plays Eva Peron with conviction and aplomb

British actress Kingston plays the titular role of “Evita” Eva Peron convincingly from beginning to end. Even if you do not have the slightest knowledge of Argentina’s history and politics, her steadfast portrayal of Eva is easy to appreciate right from the very start, when she pines to leave her provincial town for a better life in the capital city of Bueno Aires.

Eva’s wide-eyed ambitions of glory as an actress is channeled effortlessly by Kingston, and when she sings of getting “just a little bit of star quality” in ‘Bueno Aires’, we couldn’t help but root for her to become a star eventually.

As an assured, driven Eva, Kingston’s rendition of ‘Don’t Cry for Me Argentina’ was genuinely moving. Unfortunately, there were parts when this writer couldn’t really make out the words she was singing. While it could be a case of to-be-improved enunciation, it could also have been caused by the overzealous orchestra.
