Singapore’s theatre scene is on the rise, and you don’t want to miss the chance to catch the latest new plays by our emerging and undiscovered writing talents. There’s no better place to do so than at the Singapore Theatre Festival, which continues to be the only festival in Singapore dedicated to developing and producing new local works.

With so many activities going on at this year’s festival, here are five things we are most excited about:

3. Frank dialogues about diversity and inclusion in Singapore

Aiming to be ambitious with their social themes this year, the festival is delving deep into some of the most complex contemporary issues in Singapore: racial and LGBTQ inclusion. Aside from the main eight plays, the festival is also presenting “Absence Makes the Heart…” and “The Insiders,” as part of their free late-night fringe activities. If you love “Building A Character,” you’ll enjoy learning more about the history of Indian representation in local theatre with Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai again, who stars in “Absence Makes the Heart.” First performed last year at The Vault, this play also features nostalgic characters like Rosemary Joseph from Dick Lee’s “Beauty World.”

Our LGBTQ community also gets a spotlight in this year’s festival. If you’re fascinated by “Faghag,” which traces comedian Pam Oei’s colourful life as a public ally of the LGBTQ community, get to know more about the history towards inclusion from the perspective of more than 20 Singapore queer women in “The Insiders,” a documentary play written by Alfian Sa’at.

Catch “Absence Makes the Heart” on 6 July at 10pm, and “The Insiders” on 20 July at 10pm. Both performances are free and held at LASALLE’s Lowercase Café.
