Despite our well-acclaimed (sometimes rigid) education system and world-renowned Changi Airport, Singapore may not necessarily excel when it comes to producing quality brands that perform on the world stage. However, with National Day just around the corner, we did some probing and found some local household names that have gone on to do bigger things beyond this island-state. These brands have muscled their way through the bigger players within their industry to build a name for themselves and simultaneously put Singapore on the world map.

3. Jumbo Seafood

Whilst home-grown Roland’s Restaurant laid claim to being the creator of popular Singapore dish – the Chili Crab back in 1956, Jumbo Seafood which began in 1987 continues to whet the appetites of Singaporeans with its iconic Black Pepper and Chili Crab, Golden Salted Egg Prawns, Crispy Fried Baby Squid and countless other seafood favourites. Seizing the opportunity to bring the local delicacy to overseas market, the restaurant expanded into cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Ho Chi Minh and more recently in Xián,  totalling to eight outlets beyond Singapore shores. As we continue to relish the delights of the sinful tastiness of fried mantou (steam bun) drizzled in the glorious orange chilli sauce gravy, Jumbo continues to set its sights on other major cities in China, looking to be the big name in seafood not just in South East Asia.
