This suburban stylish bakery-eatery serves satisfying meals in big portions but probably tries too hard for certain menu items

The Bukit Timah/Farrer Road area sees a new café addition in The Missing Pan for the tai tai community to gather, savour a bite and sip on coffee.

Brought to you by the owners of the now-defunct Uppercrust on Circular Road, The Missing Pan features an organic bakery on the first floor and an airy bright space above for the brasserie.

“The Missing Pan was designed to be an approachable, loft-style bakery. Our passion lies in all things natural, and that transcends from the look and feel of the space, to what’s offered on the menu,” says Grace Chia, co-founder of the eatery.

Daily Brunch Menu

I like the fact that The Missing Pan has a brunch menu every day, adding to the laid-back upper crust vibe that assumes there’s always time to spare for brunch.

I loved the Beetroot Quinoa Salad ($12++), a slightly sweet and tangy quinoa salad with candied beetroot, arugula and herb flatbread strips. The beetroot did not have an earthy scent which made this salad refreshing.

The Rosemary Rosti Stack ($16++) doesn’t score any points for being healthy but I must say that the portions at The Missing Pan are very big and can be shared. The rosti stack comes with bacon and two sunny-side-up eggs, tomatoes and a side of grilled zucchini salad.

I was quite disappointed with the 62 Degree Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon ($22++). It seemed to me like a soft-boiled egg atop toast with a side of cooked house-smoked salmon with aburi Hollandaise sauce. The point is: I like my eggs benny poached with vinegar. If I had wanted soft-boiled eggs, I would have gone to Ya Kun!

Elaborate Recipes

I got the distinct vibe that the chefs at The Missing Pan are trying very hard to impress with their innovation, and that resulted in certain dishes being over the top, such as the French Toast Salpicon ($19++), a sweet and savoury combination of chicken, spinach and mushroom stuffed in French toast, banana nuggets, mixed berries, and homemade strawberry-smoked maple syrup.

I did like the sweet portion of this meal but the savoury within sent my taste buds in a whirl. However, it is still not a bad take on the French toast.

The Kids Menu items aren’t kid-sized at all, as the portions can feed one adult. The Roast Chicken Ciabatta ($12++) with apple and raisin slaw came with a side of French fries.

The eatery has a separate menu for dinner, and serves homemade milkshakes and a selection of craft beer.
