Fond memories & favourite Christmas food

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and more so with your favourite Christmas food! We find out which are festive favourites

It’s the most wonderful time of the year to huddle and cuddle with loved ones, especially when you have a glorious spread to help to set the Christmas mood.

Before you get together during this time of the year with your family and friends, and eat your heart out, take a moment to reflect upon your favourite Christmas food.

Whether it is an ethnic speciality or a giant turkey beckoning the entire family, what memories does it bring back for you?

We asked a few of our readers what their favourite Christmas food is, and why.

“It’s the time of the year where I will pig out! Christmas log cakes give me a feeling of a ‘White Christmas’. Since we have no snow here, I can imagine that it is with the snowman figurine atop the log cake.”

– Katherine Sng, mother of one and founder of Bubbamama.com

“What really embodies Christmas in a bite for me is my mom’s sugee cake, with royal icing. It is a tradition my grandma passed down to my mom.”

“Every year, just before Christmas, the house will be filled with the scent of fruit cake and sugee cake baking in the oven. There’s just something about the flavour of those toasted almonds, the combination of softness with bite, and the sweetness of the icing that makes it Christmas for me.”

“She’d decorate each cake with those retro plastic Christmas cake decorations. Though it looks cheesy, every year, it makes me feel like a kid again.”

– Garry Moss, public relations consultant

“There are lots of great dishes during Christmas but if I had to choose one, it would be Christmas Ham. The taste of it coupled with the celebration of Christmas is a wonderful feeling.”

– Germaine Pereira, 24, associate

“My favourite Christmas food has got to be Devil’s Curry [curry debal]. It’s such a hearty dish with sausages, ham, bacon and roast pork. It’s one dish I look forward to every Christmas.”

– Samantha Fernando, 25, student care teacher

“My favourite dish during Christmas has to be Roast Turkey. Turkey is a dish not widely popular among Singaporeans as an everyday meal and Christmas is probably the only time we get to enjoy the dish.”

– Cecilia Soh, 54, principal

“When I was a young boy, my family used to hold Christmas lunch gatherings for family and friends every year.”

“Since then, my favourites have always been honey baked ham, our homemade punch, which had a slight variation each year, and my late mom’s Shepherd’s Pie and Melting Moment cookies, made with a lot of love.”

“My mom is no longer around and we don’t have these gatherings anymore but, until today, these types of food warm my heart and bring back memories that make me smile.”

“People are still raving about how good my mom’s Melting Moments and pie used to be.”
