It’s craft beer heaven here

If you haven’t been to the original in Perth’s Fremantle or the Hong Kong outpost at Kennedy Town, you surely must have acquainted your taste buds to Little Creature’s craft beer wares at local hipster cafes such as 40 Hands and Common Man Coffee Roasters. Still doesn’t right a bell? Not even when we tell you the beers are readily available at Cold Storage at $28 for a pack of six?
Well, it’s fine time you warm up to the Australian brewery as it finally set up shop here in Singapore.
With its storefront already shrouded by deliberately planted shrubbery, the Singaporean outlet doesn’t seem to make its presence known as getting there requires the extra effort of walking round the bend off Club Street to Mohammad Lane. If not for the gastropub’s vague signboard bearing the winged cherub logo along the main Club Street, imbibers on a prowl may missed out on this gem of a waterhole entirely.
But for those in the know, locating Little Creatures’ coordinates will confer you to its iconic hoppy thirst-quenchers that will be soon brewed fresh every day – that’s right, the gastropub comes fitted with its own microbrewery in full view. Resident brewer Jum Ryan is looking to create Singapore-exclusive brews once the system is up and running, where an interactive beer tasting workshop is set to take place for visitors to see how beers are brewed.
Right now, the gastropub offers a range of six beers (from $12), including the flagship Pale Ale, Original Pils, Bright Ale, IPA, Rogers’ and White Rabbit White Ale. There are also three seasonal brews (from $11) such as Singapore’s own Club Street Sub IPA, the refreshing wheat Lunar Ale and the earthy Mt. Hood IPA.
Grub offered at Little Creatures is decent. You’ll find the usual pizzas, pastas, and Mediterranean-inspired sharing plates such as the Tomato Burrata ($22) and Lamb and Chicken Skewers ($27). To showcase the Fremantle’s coastline, oceanic offerings such as Steamed Mussels ($29) in creamy sauce are offered, alongside the only Singaporean offering Fried Man Tou ($19) with chilli crab sauce – a gesture of locality that is appreciated but frankly, we can do without.
With already four outlets under its belt, Little Creatures’ theme of open spaces, chilled vibes and chic industrial design elements is said to remain constant, no matter the geographical location.
If only this were the case when it came to the warm hospitality that most Australian entities are lauded for – something we noticed lacking when we revisited the bar on a rather slow Saturday night. While we were not expected to be lavished with a string of overly-enthusiastic ”G’day Mate”s, our presence was noticeably not warmly received by what-we-thought will be bright eyed and bushy tailed service staff. Instead, it took a good 10 minutes before we were handed menus without so much of basic pleasantries.
Aside the rather disappointing encounter, Little Creatures is definitely a destination worth at least a visit, best done so in large parties where more is always merrier. Plus, everything on the menu is at NETT prices – so you’ll pay for what you get!
