5 Dishes From Soi 60 To Make You Go “Aroy Mak Mak!”

Soi 60 is a great dining option if you’re looking for a laid-back atmosphere with modern Thai cuisine and some kickass cocktails to boot. Situated at Robertson Quay, the restaurant is a favourite haunt for families, expats and yuppies alike.

While the dishes tend to less piquant and spicy, compared to conventional Thai food — and that’s not necessarily a bad thing — they are creative and flavourful.

 1. Salmon Tartare

In line with Soi 60’s contemporary take on Thai cuisine, you’ll find dishes like the Salmon Tartare ($14). Fresh and tender cubes of raw salmon is combined with lime, chili and herbs for a refreshing starter. I found myself going for seconds and thirds — spooning the tartare onto the accompanying prawn crackers was such a treat.

2. Iberico Pork

This was the star of our meal: Slices of slow cooked Iberico Pork crusted in Thai spice and paired with a chili sauce. Charred to perfection, each slice was tender and slightly smoky.

3. Crab Betel Leaves

Crab Betel Leaves ($14) is one of the more unusual offerings from Soi 60. It combines the fresh and peppery taste of betal leaves with chunks of pickled crab meat. Topped with coconut milk and peanuts, each mouthful is an explosion of textures.

4. Red Crispy Duck Curry

While the Red Crispy Duck Curry ($22) had the mildest heat I’ve ever tasted in a curry — there was barely a hint of spice — it was nonetheless rich and flavourful. I picked up hints of pineapple and tomato, which lent sweetness to the curry. The highlight was the duck confit swimming in the middle of it all, which had crisp skin and fork-tender flesh.

5. Dessert Platter

We had the pleasure to sample the restaurant’s to-be-launched Dessert Platter ($15), which came with two sweet treats. The Black Sticky Rice Mango Mousse is a modern take on the traditional mango sticky rice. It came with bits of fresh mango and salted coconut cream to counterbalance the sweetness. Overall, a pretty interesting dessert.

The Coconut Panna Cotta, on the other hand, was a milky, melt-in-your mouth creation. It would’ve been a boring dessert if not for the bits of grilled and crunchy pineapple.
