Long Chim In Marina Bay Sands Packs A Punch

Celebrity Chef David Thompson’s Thai restaurant, Long Chim at Marina Bay Sands revamps menu

By Nicole-Marie Ng

Long Chim, meaning ‘come and taste’ in Thai, is David Thompson’s invitation to diners to sample authentic Thai street food.

The dishes you’ll find here are spicy, raw and unapologetically Thai. Don’t expect gimmicky twists or mild flavours, everything on the menu is set to pack a punch.

There’s never a dull moment in Long Chim. From the sight of graffiti hand painted by Thai street artists (be sure to check out the three-eyed baby in the handicapped toilet) to the clashing of woks in the open kitchen; every corner overwhelms the senses before the food even touches your mouth.

Fresh and Fiery

The restaurant tries to trick unsuspecting diners with its simple presentation. The Chiang Mai Larp of Chicken ($16), minced chicken served on lettuces, looks innocent enough. What you don’t see is that the chicken meat is marinated with northern spices like lemongrass and bird’s eye chilli. The heat grows with each bite and lingers long after you’re done with your first wrap.

While it might be tempting stick to tried and true Thai favourites like the Green Papaya Salad and Pad Thai, why not try something new Long Chim’s extensive menu?

I especially enjoyed the Grilled Long Eggplant ($24) topped with a steamed egg and the Stir Fried Glass Noodles ($26). The noodles were packed with ingredients like squid, prawns and cured pork, giving you a real bang for your buck.

Chef David Thompson’s personal favourite dish is the Charred Rice Noodles ($30). Similar to Hor Fun, the thick gravy is bold in flavour thanks to the yellow bean paste and fried pork.

Come and Try

I recommend ordering a variety and sharing the dishes family style to get a taste of everything. Be sure to save some room for dessert too because the Banana Roti, much like the ones you find along the streets of Phuket, is absolutely to die for.

For a restaurant located at the Celebrity Restaurant level of Marina Bay Sands, Long Chim is reasonably priced for its large portions. Expect to spend about $40 per person, a bargain compared to the restaurants next door.
