Savour the best of Japan with SORA Japan Gourmet Hall by ANA Group, with delectable delights that will please any foodie and fan of the Land of the Rising Sun.

Jewel Changi Airport may be the newest East-side haunt at the moment, but let’s not forget about the other wonderful restaurants the other airport terminals have to offer! If you’re feeling in the mood for some Japanese cuisine, and want to beat the crowd at Jewel, head over to Changi Airport Terminal 1, where SORA Japan Gourmet Hall has recently set up shop.

Japanese food fans may find the name familiar from its very first outlet at Changi Airport Terminal 2 – it was so successful that ANA Airlines decided to open this new outlet! Here, the Terminal 1 outlet showcases the best Japanese dishes from three prefectures: Fukuoka, Hokkaido and Kanagawa. Modelled after a business class lounge, the 116-seater SORA at Terminal 1 will feature classic and exclusive dishes from renowned Japanese brands, in particular, Ikkousha, Yoshimi and Megumi Maru. Satisfy your cravings with the variety of offerings, from  Yatai-style ramen and maze don, to Hokkaido milk soft-serve ice-cream and thick, fluffy pancakes!

As ramen fans, we happily slurped up piping-hot bowls of Yatai-style ramen from  Ikkousha, which will only be available at SORA! The restaurant specialises in Hakata ramen, with a delightfully creamy tonkotsu broth that is made by simmering high-quality pork bones for many hours. Light and fragrant with umami, we especially enjoyed the Special Black Garlic Ramen (S$20.90), where the punchy aroma of garlic oil enhanced the flavour of the broth. Go for the Special Tonkotsu Ramen (S$18.70) if you’d like something lighter, or the Special Red Chilli Ramen (S$20.90) for a hit of spice.

Can’t go without rice? Get a bowl of maze-don from Megumi Maru, Singapore’s first-ever maze-don concept! Much like a poke bowl, maze-don consists of fluffy sushi rice topped with an assortment of fresh toppings and special sauces; a healthy and fulfilling meal choice. Our favourite was the Kaisen Maze Don (S$18.80), where a colourful medley of akami, salmon, boiled prawn, unagi, takuan, onsen tamago is perched atop a bed of sushi rice, and drizzled with a tasty dressing made with sea urchin and shoyu. Or go for the Maguro and Salmon Maze Don (S$17.30), where luxurious chunks of maguro and salmon top sushi rice, along with ladyfinger and purple cabbage, as well as a deliciously jiggly onsen egg!

Katsu fans, don’t miss out on Yoshimi! Hailing from Sapporo, Hokkaido, with 19 outlets in Japan, this their first overseas foray! An exclusive highlight is the Mille-feuille Katsu Set (S$26.80), which boasts 16 layers of pork that creates a tender, short-rib-like texture unlike any katsu that we’ve ever tasted before; while the curry is a curation of specially curated recipe from Yoshimi made using a blend of over 15 herbs and spices.

We also enjoyed the Pork Loin Katsu Set (S$23.80), with its melt-in-the-mouth layers of fat and crisp outer layer of panko. Don’t forget to crush up the sesame seeds and dip your katsu pieces into the sauce!

End off your meal with the fluffy, cloud-like Mixed Berry Pancake (S$19.80), or the deliciously rich and creamy Hokkaido Soft-serve Ice cream (S$6.90).
