Restaurant Review: No Gluten Allowed In The Dishes Whipped Up At The Butcher’s Wife

But that doesn’t mean that taste is compromised
Tiong Bahru is often regarded as one of the hip-er hangouts in Singapore. From the namesake Tiong Bahru Market for grocery-shopping to historic spots such as graves of Tan Tock Seng and family, and Qi Tian Gong Temple, the district is one heck of playground to sight-see and rediscover Singapore. The area also serves as a perfect destination to indulge in one of Singaporeans’ favourite pastimes: Cafe-hopping. We’re talking about spending the entire afternoon visiting the likes of Drips for its pretty tarts, 40 Hands for awesome coffee, and Merci Marcel for glass of wine in its super Instagrammable interior.
If Open Door Policy is part of the cafe-hopping itinerary, then here’s giving you heads up that the restaurant has made way for The Butcher’s Wife. Fret not if its predecessor is your go-to place for gluten-free grub as the new kid on the block serves up hearty European fare sans the pesky proteins found in grains.
Now now, don’t get it twisted and think that gluten-free equals flavour-less food.
Chilled Almond Soup ($17)
For starts. The Butcher’s Kitchen does a mean Baked Focaccia ($9) that boasts a soft and chewy texture, accented with tomatoes, onions and thyme. But don’t overdo it with the carboloading! You want to save your belly space for the starters of Our Green Pea ‘Hummus’ ($19) and Chilled Almond Soup ($17). The aforementioned dishes are a testament to the restaurant’s culinary creativity, where the former lays succulent lamb sausages on a refreshing mush of pistachios , mint and yoghurt, while the latter is simply a bowl of almond soup, where crab meat and green apples are thoughtfully added to neutralize the nuts’ bitterness.
Grilled Rib-Eye Steak ($57)
For dishes that are heartier, opt for the grass-fed Argentinian Grilled Rib-Eye Steak ($57) that oozes clean, sweet beef juices from its perfect pinkish center. The hunk of meat is further enhanced with a swipe of bearnaise sauce, while the side of triple cooked chips ensures you’re left feeling stuffed. Another must-try is the Grilled Octopus ($28), presented sprawled on a blend of tuna mayo and salsa verde bedding. The tendril is perfectly charred at the ends.
