In Peranakan cuisine, a tiny morsel can give a burst of flavour. These little bites of delight are no exception.

Kueh Pie Tee is one of the smallest yet most popular Peranakan food items. Try making them with this recipe.

INGREDIENTS

• Cup Shells
• 8 to 10 pieces of ready-made pie tee cup shells

Filling

• Cooking oil
• 10g of chopped garlic
• 50g of sliced red onion
• 80g of minced pork
• 300g of shredded sweet turnip
• 80g of chopped shrimp
• 100g of shredded carrot
• 50g of sliced dried shitake mushroom
• 50g of chopped tofu
• 1 teaspoon of sesame oil
• Salt to taste
• Sugar to taste
• White pepper powder

Garnish

• Fried shallots
• Chopped spring onion
• Steamed crab meat

METHOD

• Heat up the cooking oil in a wok and add in the chopped garlic, red onion, pork and shrimp, and stir-fry.
• Add the sweet turnip, carrot and mushrooms to the wok and continue to stir-fry.
• Add in the remaining ingredients before adding in a little water.
• Cover and cook until the sweet turnip turns slightly transparent.
• Add seasoning to taste.
• Garnish with steamed crab meat [if available], chopped spring onion and fried shallots.
