Having already determined the region’s finest at the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants award ceremony that took place in March, the culinary realm promptly moved its sights to pinpoint the best on a global scale from this year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

Held in the Spanish port city of Bilbao, the award ceremony saw only one Singapore entrant making the cut for 2018’s list, that being Chef Julien Royer’s French restaurant Odette at the National Gallery.

The first-time induction for Odette comes fitting with its two-Michelin-star standing and its recent awarded No.5 spot on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant list. The restaurant clinched the 28th ranking on the World’s Best Restaurant list.

Last year had the now-defunct Restaurant Andre taking the 14th spot – it was the only Singapore restaurant entry on the list.

The coveted No.1 spot for world’s best was given to Italy’s Osteria Francescana, with Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca and France’s Mirazur hot on its heels, taking second and third place respectively.

Repping Asia is Thailand’s Gaggan that is ranked No.5. The Bangkok restaurant tops this year’s Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant list – a standing it has secured in the last four years.

Compiled by British trade magazine Restaurant, the World’s 50 Best Restuarant list is decided by 1,000 international culinary experts, grouped in panels of 40 members to deliberate over 26 separate regions around the world. Each member will list 10 restaurant choices, of which they had dined at for the last 18 months, in order of preference, where at least four must be beyond their home region.
