The Aussie-style Porchetta

End the week or start it with a Sunday Roast at Intrepid Gastro Bar. It is great roasts for great value

By Cheryl Chia

If you’ve been to Australia or watched enough television programmes, you’d know that Sundays are typically days where family and friends gather around roasting large portions of meat.

Intrepid Gastro Bar at Far East Square tries to recreate that same meal with quality cuts and meats.

A Feast of Roast

Husband and wife owners Rommel and Michelle started the joint with the full intention of never letting anyone “leave the restaurant still hungry”. Every first Sunday of the month, they have a full-blown Sunday Roast with a soup, three choices of meat to choose from, three side dishes and a dessert for the reasonable price of $29.95.

The roast changes according to seasonality but diners can expect dishes such as a succulent Premium Aussie Leg of Lamb – crusted with green peppercorns, rosemary and a garlic rub – an Aussie Style Porchetta stuffed with apricot and mild pimentos with sage brown butter, or a Roasted Free Range Hen with butter tarragon and burnt lemon.

The porchetta was smoky and fatty in the right places with crispy crackling on the top of the roast. Our only gripe was that the crackling was uneven, probably because the bottom of the roast was sitting in its juices. The Roasted Free Range Hen was incredibly tender as well.

For Sharing

One of their sharing platters is a Broiled 200 Days Australian Angus bone-in rib-eye with grilled corn salsa, grilled lemon, braised root vegetables, bourbon mustard and béarnaise sauce. To feed three to four people, the medium-broiled steak is tender and well seasoned.

Intrepid Gastro Bar also has Kangaroo Sliders ($18) with prosciutto ham and truffle aioli and onion relish, as well as a Kangaroo Loin ($38) with glazed peaches, if you are adventurous. It tastes somewhere between beef and venison.
