The bubble tea craze in Singapore is here to stay, with the opening of leading Taiwanese boba brand Milksha here on 22nd June at Suntec City! With over 230 outlets in Taiwan, China and Hong Kong; this is the brand’s first ever Southeast Asian outlet! They are known for their deliciously milky drinks made with all-natural and fresh ingredients that garner snaking queues in their homeland of Taiwan – and we had the chance to try a few of their signature beverages.

With a brand mission of “Natural, Handmade and Unique Milk Beverages”, Milksha uses only 100% natural fresh milk, not creamer; as well as natural ingredients such as sugar from sugar cane to create its products. No preservatives, chemical ingredients or artificial colouring are used in the beverages – great news for those who have a sweet tooth and weakness for boba, but are looking to lead a healthier lifestyle!

What sets Milksha apart would be their honey pearls which are freshly cooked and frozen with quick-freeze technology before being air-flown directly to Singapore, which maintains the texture and taste consistency of each pearl. In the kitchens, the pearls are then cooked daily with Taiwanese honey for a deliciously aromatic taste!

We thoroughly enjoyed Milksha’s honey pearls – fragrant, floral and with a strong honey aroma; plus a nice QQ texture, these are pearls worth queuing up for!

In Singapore, the brand will launch four series: Fresh Milk Series, Fresh Milk Tea Latte Series, Premium Tea Series and Special Concoctions. The five signatures include Azuki Matcha Milk, Fresh Taro Milk, Valrhona 100% Cocoa Milk, Refreshing Orange Green Tea and Earl Grey Latte with Honey Pearl. Toppings include honey pearls; grass jelly; and pudding.

One of our favourites was the Brown Sugar Milk with Honey Pearls ($5.60), featuring fresh milk, fragrant brown sugar, and Milksha’s signature pearls. Creamy, mildly sweet and with delightful bursts of sweet texture thanks to the pearls, this is a welcome change from the usual brown sugar boba teas out there!

Chocolate-lovers who don’t like their drinks too rich would enjoy the Valrhona 100% Cocoa Milk ($4.80), which premium Valrhona cocoa from France. While it was a little too milky for our taste, we appreciated how it wasn’t overly thick – we could foresee ourselves sipping down a whole cup on a hot day!

Speaking of hot days, we recommend getting the Refreshing Orange Green Tea ($4.20) if you’re feeling like getting something fruity! The drink makes use of whole oranges imported from Taiwan, even the zest. Sweet, citrusy, and with the light bitter aftertaste of green tea; this is the perfect summer drink! Hot tip: add on honey pearls when you get this. You won’t regret it.

Matcha fans, look out Azuki Matcha Milk ($5.60) which features matcha specially imported from the famed hundred-year-old brand Izumo Tousuien (桃翠園). Earthy, creamy and sweet thanks to the azuki beans, this is a matcha made in heaven!

You might be surprised to see that Milksha’s Fresh Taro Milk ($5.60) isn’t a virulent violet shade; but that’s because they use hand-mashed taro from the Taiwanese province of Dajia with zero preservatives or colouring!

Milksha also aims to be environmentally-friendly and reduce the usage of single-use plastics, by making special Milksha tumblers and Singapore-exclusive cloth cup sleeves that feature local landmarks! Stocks are limited, so do be sure to get them before they are all snapped up!

The cup sleeves will be available with every purchase of a drink while stocks last at both Suntec and Funan outlets (both outlets each offer 2 of their own store-exclusive cup sleeve designs), while for the tumbler, just purchase any 4 drinks at Milksha’s Funan outlet from 28th June onwards to snag one!
