With Japanese cuisine having taken the world by storm — from sushi to ramen to omakase menus — there’s no doubt that dainty Japanese desserts too will make their way into the hearts of Singaporeans, if they haven’t already.

Colourful Eclairs & Parfaits

Karafuru, a Japanese-inspired lifestyle brand and desserts café (opened in August) seems to tick all the right boxes in terms of visual and gastronomical appeal.

With a name that simply translates to “colourful”, this café serves an array of signature eclairs and gourmet yoghurt
parfaits in a variety of attractive, summer colours. Paired with a clean and white interior, you can be sure it’s a food photographer’s haven.

Traditional with a Twist

The hallmarks of great Japanese dessert lie in the attention to detail, quality ingredients that reflect the different seasons, and artistic plating.

At Karafuru, traditional Japanese flavours are reimagined, resulting in original creations such as the Jasmine Matcha éclair, which combines the aromatic notes of Jasmine flowers with the astringency of Japanese green tea.

Fans of the tangy yuzu can try the Yuzu-Cha parfait, which marries the flavours of English Earl Grey tea with fragrant yuzu peels, as well as Bergamot.

Helmed by Chef Michael Liu of Windowsill in the Woods, Karafuru’s eclairs (priced from $6-$7) appear to be lighter and fluffier than its French counterparts, with a slightly savoury choux pastry that is hand-piped and crisp.

For a change from the classic Japanese parfait, choose from endless textural combinations of freshly-made soft-serve yoghurt, moist soufflé cakes, wobbly puddings, chewy dango balls and more.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised, but don’t forget to take photos.
