From Mar 1 to 10, Chef Moon presents an impressive lunch bento set to celebrate Hina Matsuri
Back for the fourth year running, Chef Moon Kyung Soo has outdone himself yet again with this year’s Hina Matsuri bento set.
Beautifully presented in a 3-tier drawer made from fine China, each dish is a treasure in its own right. Instead of jewels and pearls, you’ll find other delicacies like slow-cooked abalone served in its shell and pops of ikura.
Drawing from feminine inspiration
The three-tier bento is the first of its kind in Singapore.
Traditionally celebrated in Japan on Mar 3, Hina Matsuri marks a day when families wish their daughters success and happiness in life.
In honour of this, Chef Moon has created a feast for the feminine eye and palate. The 7-course bento starts off with an organic Japanese green salad served with snow crab, orange, blueberry and black sesame dressing. The light and fruity salad whets the appetite for more to come.
A closer look at the culinary treasures within the ornate china drawers.
The drawer can be eaten from top to bottom or in any order you wish. The first tier contains Mikuni’s Signature Truffle Kanpachi served with an indulgent black truffle soy sauce.
The second tier is a showcase of eight traditional Japanese appetisers like grilled miso cod, abalone, octopus, and an adorable miso quail egg disguised as a fruit.
The star of the meal was undoubtedly the Chirashi Don in the third drawer. The peppery rice is topped with Miyazaki Wagyu Beef, Prawn, Ikura and Tamago, balancing sweet with savoury with each bite.
The bento set also comes with mixed tempura that was so crispy my loud crunches could be heard by my dining partner sitting opposite from me. I also liked that the batter was just a thin coating that did not get soggy while I was busy nibbling on the other components of the bento.
Finish your meal with this simple yet refined dessert.
For dessert, be treated to a serving of Shizoka Muskmelon with Salted Ice Cream. Muskmelon is one of the most expensive fruits in the world, and for good reason. The delicate Salted Ice Cream helps to enhance the natural sweetness of the Muskmelon instead of overpowering it.
Grab your girlfriends for a memorable lunch at Mikuni. The Hina Matsuri bento is priced at $120++ per person for lunch and includes a complimentary glass of Amazake.
