Another place to relax over a cup of coffee has opened in Dempsey with the addition of Becasse
The smell of freshly-baked goods at Dempsey Hill has gotten stronger.
You may be familiar with Becasse, the artisan patisserie and bakery at Ion Orchard, but it now takes on a larger and airier space in the expatriate enclave of Dempsey Hill.
The new outlet at Dempsey Hill also features an open seafood bar lined with oysters, lobsters, jumbo prawns, Moreton Bay bugs, and Alaskan crab. Overall, the menu is also way more extensive, with a wide range of dishes available.
Much More than Bread
The breakfast/brunch options at Becasse are quite typical, except for the Sticky Date Pancakes ($13). Excuse me, while I wipe the drool from my face… The pancake batter is infused with the dates, resulting in a fluffy, rich pancake covered in butterscotch sauce, bananas, and vanilla ice cream. Sticky Date for breakfast? Yes, please!
The sharing menu features tons of goodies such as the Homemade Boursin Cheese ($12), cream cheese with onion and chives with rocket salad, beetroot and compressed fruit and nuts. I love boursin cheese; it feels like eating solid sour cream and onion flavoured chips, minus the potatoes.
The one at Becasse is thick, rich, and fresh.
Feedlot Fresh
The meats available at Becasse range from pork to beef… and even rabbit! They do a Rabbit Schnitzel ($27) with fennel and radicchio coleslaw.
However, my favourite was the Hand Cut Steak Tartare ($18), mixed with a raw egg, horseradish mayonnaise, frisee lettuce, and salmon crisps. The horseradish mayonnaise added a slight kick to the raw meat.
I’m not going to recommend the cakes for dessert because I feel that the Macaron Milkshakes ($8) are must-try. The macarons that go with them are bigger than most, and can give you excellent food pictures.
My Salted Caramel and Toffee Popcorn milkshake came with a bright blue macaron that had a salted caramel filling and toffee popcorn adorning on the top, as well as chocolate popping candy for a surprising texture. They also serve Dark Chocolate and French Vanilla milkshakes.
