This newly-opened “taqueira” serves fusion Mexican food

There’s been a Mexican wave fanning through town lately. Joining the tide is newly-opened taqueira, Lower East Side.

Located next to Katong Shopping Centre, this airy and rustic place serves spicy Mexican fusion food, mezcals – an alcoholic drink made from the maguey plant – and craft beers.

Started by the same folks behind Spathe Public House, you can expect food with
a twist.

Mexican Accents

Chef Claudio Sandri, of Spathe and Lower East Side, says, “We work closely with our suppliers to bring in a host of indigenous spicy chillies from Mexico like habaneros, poblanos, and jalapenos. We then make our own pickled chillies and sauces, and offer three levels of spiciness so that customers can go for the no-holds barred spice levels!”

We found the Level Two spiciness more than a mere kick to the teeth, so our advice is to stick to either the first or second levels unless you are a chilli fiend.

Their Tilapia Taco ($12 for one, $28 for three) comprises a broiled fillet with tomatoes, onions, cilantro and caper berries and is served on a deep fried flour tortilla which we loved.

Also try their Octopus & Squid Burrito ($18) stuffed with lettuce, green apples, avocado, bacon and chipotle salsa.

More to Come

When we were there, the chef surprised us with his own homemade Portuguese egg tarts, to be on the menu soon.

Their Horchata ($5) a traditional Hispanic beverage with grains, almonds, nuts and cinnamon – is a milky yet refreshing chilled drink that is enjoyed in the summer.

It is a perfect drink to put out the fire in your mouth.
