Homeground Grill: Heartland Grill & Bar With Food That Warms The Soul
SHARE WITH FRIENDS!
It’s good vibes only at Homeground Grill, and with a curated but comforting menu plus a cosy atmosphere; you’ll definitely be feeling nothing but good vibes when you leave.
When you arrive at Homeground Grill, you’ll be greeted by doors that proclaim it as ‘your local safehouse’. While the decor, at first glance minimalist hipster-chic with neon quote-lit walls and even fairy lights; you’ll realise also has a sense of comfort to it – no backless or metal-wrought chairs here! The private dining area is also furnished with tapestries and magazines for added cosiness. You’d be forgiven if you thought that this was a cafe at first glance.
If you’re a meat-lover, you might have a bit of difficulty choosing a main from their menu (because we sure did!) But if you’re not here alone, you can opt for Homeground’s various sharing platters, to try the best of their grills on a plate! We recommend the hefty Homeground Mixed Platter (S$72), a huge platter that allows you to sample all their grills: the signature whisky ribeye, Norwegian salmon bathed in malt, a trio of butter and garlic tiger prawns, savoury bratwurst sausage, grilled chicken with crispy sweet skin; plus roasted potatoes and sautéed mushrooms. It’s massive, and enough to feed two very hungry people, maybe three if they have smaller appetites.
We especially loved the Charcoal Grilled Whisky Ribeye (S$26) – juicy and ever-so-fragrant with the char from the grill, with the latter accentuating the sweetness of the whisky marinade. Spectacular too, were the seafood: the Charcoal Grilled Salmon (S$18) was wonderfully flavourful and tender, while the tiger prawns (available in the Seagrill with the salmon for S$48) were grilled to perfection, the fragrance of the charcoal most evident here.
Don’t miss out on the Potato Skins & Sour Cream ($8) either: crisp on the outside, warm, fluffy and oozing with cheese on the inside; these were the perfect and most indulgent companion to our meatiful meal. Of course, if potato skins aren’t your thing, there are other awesome light bites and bar grub on the menu too: from the crowd favourite Truffle Fries ($10) to a creamy Truffle Mash ($10), as well as a Grilled Portobello Mushroom ($7) bathed in garlic butter and topped with melted cheese – heaven on a mushroom, we think.
Take a sip on some quality tipples in between bites of your grilled meal too! Homeground offers up a a decent selection of beers (from S$10), spirits (from S$10 per glass) and house wines (from S$12), as well as five creative house cocktails shaken up by co-owner and bar manager Chrystal.
The signature Tian Cha (S$18) is an intriguing, refreshing mix of whisky, tieguanyin tea, mint and lemon that left us wanting more – you’d never have thought that tea would go well with whisky!
Go for the very pretty Moondust (S$16) if you’re in the mood for something fruity: a mix of vodka, watermelon, lychee and rosemary, this was sweeter and easy to down.
Or, if you feel like being contrary, the Smoky Bastard ($17) is an amazing Christmassy-tasting concoction of rum, apple and tonic smoked with cinnamon. Like a liquid, alcohol-infused apple pie and all the best parts of Christmas, this was perhaps our favourite cocktail of the three we tried!
If you still have space for dessert – and of course you do – end off your meal with the Yin Yang Ice-Cream Sandwich (S$9), made in collaboration with the folks from Geometry, an ice-cream parlour near ABC Brickworks. Two luscious ice-cream cookie sandwiches are presented on a mini pan; Earl Grey tieguanyin ice-cream with chocolate chip cookies, and toffee-flavoured ice-cream with double chocolate chip cookies. Light and not overly sweet, we also liked the texture of the cookies – they were chewy but not hard, and didn’t crumble easily; providing the perfect vehicle for the ice-cream. A wonderful end to a hearty meal!
Owners Nellie Tan and Chrystal Yeong opened the restaurant-bar as a common gathering space for their friends who live in the area; and there’s a warmth and friendliness in the atmosphere, that suffuses through the sincerity in the food and drinks that they serve, that will have you wanting to return. If not that, then for the amazing and affordable grills and wonderful drinks – it’s a place to bring your friends to and while the night away over a hearty meal and a drink or two!
