German cuisine is often known for its malty beers, paired with hearty meals of crackling pork knuckles and loops of sausages and rye bread or stews. Well, that’s not amiss here at Frieda Restaurant, located at the Arcade @ The Capitol Kempinski and named after the only daughter of hotel founder Berthold Kempinski. Inspired by Frieda’s welcoming spirit of warmth and charm, the restaurant is a bright, botanical affair in terms of decor – beige and white with teal and wooden accents, bouquets of flowers and even a gorgeous trellis over one of the long tables!

Serving up authentic German cuisine with a modern twist, Frieda’s menu is a reinterpretation of traditional German cuisine with Austrian influences; their signatures include pork knuckle and schnitzel, as well as a refreshing house beer on tap.

Start off your meal the right way – with the excellent House-made Rye Sourdough Bread ($4): warm, tangy, and so very addictive with a smear of butter. Or dive face-first into the meats with the group sharing Platter of Grilled Sausages and Meatloaf (S$54.00++ for 2/S$105.00++ for 4), which comes with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, pretzel dumpling and Dijon mustard. We especially enjoyed the juicy Nuremberger Pork Sausages ($26 for full/$15 for half) and Pork Meat Loaf ($26 for full/$15 for half)! The mashed potatoes too, are worth a shout-out – creamy and savoury without being overly milky or overpowering.

Of course, don’t miss out on Frieda’s signature Oven Roasted Pork Knuckle (S$49) – slow-cooked with bay leaves, peppercorns, cloves, juniper berries, garlic and onions for three hours; and served with pretzel dumplings, house-made sauerkraut and beer jus. Moreish, savoury meat, with crisp, crackling skin, just the way it should be!

There’s also the Veal Wiener Schnitzel (S$37.00++), a traditional German dish of breaded pan-fried pork or chicken served with potato salad, a refreshing salad of thinly-sliced cucumber, sour cream, dill and parsley. With a crisp golden-brown skin and moist meat on the inside; this is another delicious main course alternative!

For dessert, we highly recommend the Apple Fritters with Cinnamon Sugar and Vanilla Ice-cream ($12++): warm, cinnamon-spiced apples wrapped in dough, deep-fried and served with cinnamon sugar and vanilla bean ice-cream – a delicious, holiday-like medley of flavours that kept us taking bite after bite.

The Semolina Pudding (S$12.00++) too, stole our hearts with its tart, refreshing topping of sour cherry compote!

Pair your meal with the Frieda Lager, a light and smooth German draught; or the Schneider Weisse (from $10 for 300ml), a German wheat beer that’s smooth, creamy and sweet with a mildly bitter finish. Frieda also offers a good variety of cocktails, wines, spirits!
