Silky smooth egg tarts, yuan yang tea and more

By Samantha Francis

Hankering after some authentic Hong Kong egg tarts? You’re in luck.

The Hong Kong cafe scene is seeing a revival with the opening of the much hyped about Honolulu Cafe at Orchard Centrepoint. Joining the wave of other F&B outlets like The Coffee Academics and Mak’s Noodle, the iconic cha chan teng (Hong Kong cafe) will be offering signatures like its Honolulu Egg Tart and Pineapple Bun with Butter.

Before you make plans for a visit, be sure to check out what other foodies are already raving about:

1. Honolulu Egg Tart ($1.70)

Crumbly crust reminiscent of cereal, filled with silky smooth egg custard.

2. Pineapple Bun with Butter ($2)

Slabs of melting butter in between a buttered and crusty pineapple bun.

3. Swiss Sauce Chicken Wings ($6)

Tender, with a savoury-sweet sesame oil marinade.

4. Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice ($7.80)

Tze char dishes may not be a common sight at Hong Kong cafes but this Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice dish is a must-try with its succulent chunks of pork.

5. Yuan Yang Tea (from $3.30)

Watch as Mr. Luo Tak – the Winner of both 2010 International Hong Kong Milk Tea Competition and 2011 Hong Kong Yuan Yang Competition, whips up authentic Hong Kong-style milk tea.
