As a heartlander who’s spent most of her youth at the foodie enclave that is Ang Mo Kio, I’ve been incredibly spoilt for choice when it comes to quality zichar.

So trust me when I say this hidden gem all the way in the East, is worth the travel. Despite its grandiose name, Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy is a nondescript zichar restaurant located under a HDB block at Chai Chee Drive.

Walls are covered with some newspaper clippings as well as photos of their signature dishes, taken from food bloggers who’ve left them with great reviews.

At first glance, the menu items look like standard zichar fare, but there’s more than meets the eye.

Here are our top six must-tries:

1. Dry Roast Sotong, $15

Despite its name, the Dry Roast Sotong isn’t dry at all.

Marinated overnight with soy sauce and celery, the meaty squid acquires a wonderfully savoury flavour, brought to life through the process of frying with hot oil.

The outside is nicely charred and smoky, while the inside remains moist and tender.
