Think Violet Oon and the elegance of home-style Peranakan dishes come to mind.

As food ambassador and doyenne of Singapore’s culinary heritage, her cuisine brings to mind familiar flavours with an unmistakable local touch.

Her latest foray into the F&B scene shines the spotlight on the hawker favourite — satay — and just like her other establishments Violet Oon Singapore and National Kitchen by Violet Oon, food and ambience find perfect balance here.

At Violet Oon Satay Bar & Grill, Singapore’s satays and local BBQ comes to the fore in a beautiful setting that features rattan blade fans and patterned tiles.

To be in the thick of the action, grab a seat next to the chef’s kitchen and watch the flames char the satay through a glass window.

For sheer satisfaction, you can’t go wrong with these five delectable dishes:

1. Pork satay, $16

Marinated with spices like fresh ground lemon grass, lengkuas, chillies, shallots and coriander powder, the pork satay has a wonderful fat to meat ratio. The tender chunks of sweetish meats are best enjoyed with the ground peanut sauce that’s topped with a dollop of fresh pineapple puree.
