Highclere Castle in “Downton Abbey”

Award-winning period drama “Downton Abbey” cast the spotlight on the ‘real’ Downton Abbey, the historical Highclere Castle in West Berkshire, England, which served as the primary location for the show. The castle appeared as the residence of the Earl of Grantham and his family.

Modern-day reality isn’t very different for the estate, which houses the 8th Earl of Carnarvon and his wife. The grounds and select parts of the castle are open to the public, but only for several days a year. Visitor information and updates can be found on the official website, highclerecastle.co.uk.
