Home For the Holidays

For the family of four living in this 4-bedroom apartment, a home that brings to mind balmy days at the beach was top of their wish list.

“It was important that they see this home as an escape from the city, explains Rezt & Relax designer Chong Shian Wei.

“The apartment already has a great view of the swimming pool and the surrounding greenery, so it was only natural to replicate a resort theme that the entire family can enjoy,” he says.

Inside Out

“The furniture in the living and dining rooms are actually meant for the outdoors,” reveals Shian Wei. “They’re made from synthetic rattan weave and are weather-proof. I wanted to introduce the same relaxed and laid-back vibe you get from a resort into this home,” he says.

The designer also reveals that the wall of mirror panels next to the dining set can be opened to reveal full-height cabinets that are great for storage.

All Natural

With balcony windows that open up to an expansive view of the swimming pool, Shian Wei played up the natural component of the design.

She replicated the look and feel of a modern resort by using materials that would evoke the rusticity of nature. This includes the rough-hewn stucco wall, the carpet grass on the balcony, and the false wooden beams that line the ceiling.

Two In One

Although the ceiling is only 2.7m tall, the designer split the height of the daughter’s bedroom into two and raised the bed onto the mezzanine level. The entire structure – including the steps and the support beams – was spray-painted white to maintain a clean look.

The space beneath the bed houses the daughter’s piano and drum set, as well as a study table, essentially separating the sleeping area from the rest of the room.

Study This

A smaller bedroom was converted into a study room, with built-in shelves that go up to the ceiling. A study table was customised to maximise the available floor space.

Unlike the rest of the home, the colour scheme here is simpler and more universal.

By The Window

Since the bay windows already take up a considerable amount of space in the master bedroom, they were expertly incorporated into the design of the room. The bay window ledge has been cushioned with seats to create a comfortable settee by the window.

A movable tea table was also customised to accompany the seating area.
