Rilakkuma Comes To Netflix In A Stop-Motion Animated Series

The first teaser is all kinds of adorable

Fans of the Japanese character Rilakkuma will be delighted to know that the cuddly bear is coming to streaming site Netflix in Spring 2019.

Rilakkuma was created in 2003 by Japanese company San-X. The kawaii toy-bear character has amassed a large following, mostly adult women, and has spawned thousands of commercial products and licensing contracts. There was even a pop-up Rilakkuma-themed cafe in Singapore.

Named Rilakkuma and Kaoru, the animated series uses stop-motion for your entertainment, a first for Netflix, giving us very Tim Burton vibes that just got a whole lot cuter. Details about the show’s premise are not revealed yet. However, we have a strong inkling the animated series is another family-friendly show that follows the life and adventures of not only Rikkuma and human companion Kaoru, but also their friends Korilakkum, a small white bear cub, and Kaoru’s pet bird Kiiroitori.

The series is said to comprise 13 episodes of 11 minutes each.
