The last time it played in Singapore in 2014, The Sound of Music charmed the socks off 70000 people. Three years later, the beloved musical makes its return to our sunny shores to lift spirits and fill hearts with soulful singing and stellar acting, while delivering a message that revolves around love, resilience and family.

Here's why the latest production is truly incredible:

A strong cast overall

Apart from Maria and the children, the other characters were remarkably well cast too. Captain von Trapp is played by the handsome Nicholas Maude, who reminds us of CNN’s Anderson Cooper, with his silver hair perfectly coiffed and combed backwards. If Cooper could sing, he would be Maude. While not exactly bells and whistles material, the actor’s rendition of Edelweiss was heartfelt and earnest, and we could almost hear an ounce of patriotism in his voice — as though he was truly Austrian by blood.

Janelle Visagie reprises her role of Mother Abbess from when the show ran here in Singapore in 2014, proving once again that she is the perfect fit for the role. Her onstage presence is calm and reassuring, and her powerful rendition of Climb Ev’ry Mountain just before intermission manages to lift one of the more underrated musical numbers in the show into a highlight in itself.

The Sound of Music runs till 3 December at the MasterCard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands.
