The Penang Hawkers’ Fare buffet is one of the first establishments to fly in hawkers to recreate their signature Penang dishes.

“You can’t call yourself a true foodie if you haven’t tried the food in Penang!”, retorted a peer when I declared my intention to finally make a trip to the street hawker mecca early last year.

And true enough, after a week full of unbridled feasting, I returned with a victorious smile on my face. Now, I could join the ones who rave endlessly about Penang’s teochew chendol,  the iconic assam laksa or the unforgettable wok hei of the char kway tiao.

And if you’re among the ones who have yet to experience authentic Penang cuisine, don’t miss out on York Hotel’s wildly-popular Penang Hawkers’ Fare at White Rose Cafe. Held thrice a year annually — Mar 11-27, Sep2-18 and Dec 16-Jan 1 — the buffet is also one of the first establishments to fly in Penang hawkers to recreate their signature dishes.

Assam Laksa

Learn to cook your own laksa at exclusive cooking workshops.

Here are our reasons why you should be there:

1. It’s cheaper than flying to Penang

For just $29 per adult on weekdays, you get to tuck into a buffet spread of traditional Penang dishes, prepared by hawkers who have been handpicked for their expertise and dedication to their craft. An air ticket to Penang is probably more than double the price.

2. 12 stalls to whet your appetite

Due to popular demand, the buffet has increased the number of stalls to 12 this year, featuring hawker favourites like char kway teow, nasi lemak, penang rojak and more. Its latest stall will feature the Pasembur — a Chinese-Indian style salad.

Other highlights include a show kitchen which will see hawkers performing live cooking sessions of lor bak and oyster omelette.

Char Kway Teow

Enjoy hawker favourites like char kway teow at the buffet.

3. Learn to cook your favourite Penang hawker dishes

In light of the Penang Hawker Fare’s 30th anniversary, York Hotel will be holding two exclusive cooking workshops on Mar 12 and Mar 19.

For a nominal fee of $12, participants will be able to learn the close-guarded recipes of three perennial hawker favourites — namely Penang prawn mee, Penang laksa and ban chang kueh. In return, they will receive a $12 dining voucher which can be redeemed for a la carte dining at the White Rose Cafe. Sign up at [email protected]

4. Win a trip to Penang and more

At the end of the buffet’s final edition, eight lucky pairs will stand to win a trip to Penang; inclusive of return tickets and hotel accommodation. Best of all, they will also experience an exclusive food trail led by York Hotel’s exclusive chef Charlie Tham.

In addition, each receipt with a minimum spend of $80 entitles customers to draw ‘Tikam’ prizes such as 30 per cent discount vouchers.
