Nasi Lemak is the quintessential breakfast for local Singaporeans. Here are some places to try

Fragrant coconut rice paired with an egg, fried chicken or fish, and ikan bilis with a pat of spicy sweet chilli – simply the thought of nasi lemak makes our mouths water.

Here are a few places for you [and for us] to go with the family this weekend.

Madame Kwan’s Famous Nasi Lemak Restaurant

This famous 36-year-old Malaysian nasi lemak chain opened its doors in Vivocity in May. The nasi lemak may cost more at $13.90 but the fragrant rice that comes with curry chicken, hard-boiled egg, sambal ikan bilis, achar and cucumbers is comparable to the original meal [and standards] in Malaysia.

Nasi Lemak Kukus

The owner uses the traditional method with steamed rice for the dish. Nasi Lemak Kukus also has an array of ingredients that customers can choose from. They even sell their special version of the Ramly burger. They also have Vietnamese drip-coffee.

Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak

If it’s good enough for the Sultan of Brunei, it’s good enough for us. This nasi lemak uses basmati rice – for a better flavour – as well as chillies imported from India.

Chong Pang Nasi Lemak

This place is lighter on the coconut milk in the rice, so it’s perfect for the health-conscious. The fried chicken wings and ikan kuning are lightly battered and crispy. It only closes at 7am, which makes this a great supper place.

Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak

With snaking queues, this nasi lemak cooked with Jasmine rice comes with the traditional sides of egg and chicken wing or ikan bilis and fish. They also serve paru belado – sambal beef lung.

Changi Point International Nasi Lemak

Changi Point is famous for many things, but one thing savoury is the nasi lemak. International Nasi Lemak stall is by far the best and has long queues during peak periods. Military personnel in the area swear by this, so the queues can be deceptive on weekday nights. One person could be buying for an entire platoon!
