#50 Entertainment I Wouldn't Go In There: Truth behind hauntings

Explorer and blogger RJ visits some of the most notoriously-haunted sites in Asia. Are you game enough to follow?

Are you ready to be frightened by your neighbours?

In I Wouldn’t Go In There, on National Geographic Channel Asia, Robert Joe or RJ, an urban explorer and blogger, tracks down true and often untold stories hidden behind Asia’s most notoriously-haunted sites.

The Truth Is Scarier

RJ’s hypothesis is that behind every haunted location and tale of paranormal encounters with ghosts or demons, there’s a real story waiting to be uncovered – a true story even more terrifying than the strangest fiction.

Using a combination of gumshoe detective work and modern technology, he explores the places in which many fear to tread with one burning question: What really happened here?

Ghosts of the Fallen

In the first episode of the return of this series, RJ ventures into an abandoned house where sightings of an angry female ghost and student soldiers have been said to raise up memories of the Korean War.

RJ speaks with war survivors and eye witnesses, who share insight into Yeongdeok’s troubled past. It was rumoured that bodies of the fallen were buried beneath a hill, where the Yeongdeok House now stands.

Many lives of innocent student soldiers were lost at Yeongdeok and they continue to haunt the survivors.

Allure of the Paranormal

RJ says that he believes everyone has loved ghost stories when young, whether hearing them from our elders or from friends at camps.

“People like to be scared; they enjoy the sensation of being surprised and thrilled to some extent. But the thing about I Wouldn’t Go In There is that it goes beyond the ghost stories,” says RJ.

“It’s about the history behind them that might have led to all these ghost stories in the first place,” he explains.

RJ’s Experience

RJ says, thankfully, that he hasn’t had any paranormal experience himself. Nonetheless, the team visited a lot of scary places, including forgotten tombs, long abandoned hospitals and a detention centre.

“Most of these sites are usually dark, damp and neglected and you don’t feel comfortable, making it the perfect setting for these hauntings,” says RJ.

“There were times that I felt things I couldn’t explain, but I wouldn’t be so quick as to attribute them to paranormal activity,” he says, pensively.

The Spookiest of All

Which of these haunted sites spooked RJ the most?

“I must say Rifle Range made quite an impression on me. There’s just something eerie and off about this apartment complex where it’s amazingly dark in the middle of the day,” says RJ.

He adds, “There are a lot of corners; it seems like people are constantly coming out of or around corners. But, ultimately, the stories that we got from the people on the street were probably some of the most memorable and interesting that I heard during the entire series.”

I Wouldn’t Go In There returns to screens on Sep 27, every Friday, 11pm, on National Geographic Channel, Starhub TV Ch 411 & SingTel mio TV Ch 201.
